Government of Canada to Unload AECL Laboratories

Government of Canada is seeking “Expression of Interest” as a process of selling Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL)’s Nuclear Laboratories.

Government of Canada said this process will help inform the restructuring process, a critical step to further strengthen Canada’s nuclear industry while reducing taxpayers’ exposure to financial risks in this sector.

AECL’s Nuclear Laboratories include two main sites: Chalk River Laboratories (CRL), located in Ontario, and Whiteshell Laboratories, located at Pinawa, Manitoba. The Laboratories are home to researchers with unique capabilities and expertise. Specialized facilities support key nuclear science and technology priorities that include innovation for industry, safety, security, health, environmental, waste management and clean energy technologies.

The Government of Canada will continue its role in maintaining safety, security and environmental stewardship in all aspects of the nuclear industry. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator, will continue to regulate all parts of the entire nuclear industry in Canada.
